About
I make art because I keep finding myself in it.
Often, I recognise a feeling before I know what form it might take. I follow it through making—in the presence of another person, in an image, or in the resistance of a material.
Self-portraiture is central to this process, but it is not confined to my own likeness. Sometimes, making feels like a slow distillation: I pare away what has settled around me but does not belong to my core. Yet making does more than reveal what was already there. It can also shape the very core I am trying to recognise.
I want others to enter the work, not simply to learn a story about me. Something private can become perceptible beyond the life that produced it, without having to be explained in full.
Life & practice
I make art to bring life back, beginning with my own. I have begun to let my life truly exist, to give my thymós—the force of feeling, desire, and courage—room to move.
After midnight, I walk with my dogs as the wind surges through the trees, sending their shadows rushing across the ground. I can feel the wild exuberance of that movement because something within me has come alive again.
With each work, I become more at ease in myself and more precise about what I want to express. My life enters my art, and my art returns to my life, changing how I see and what I am able to do. I want to keep this exchange alive: responsive to change, never fixed in a single form.
